The SURE test

Recognizing the decision making needs of a person and answering them
(c) O'connor & Légaré, 2008

SURE question: Do you know the benefits and risks of each option?

If the person answers 'no', then the healthcare professional can...

  • Go through the information in the Decision box again to see if something remains unclear for the patient
  • Propose that the patient make a list of questions
  • List other sources of information that might be useful to help answer their questions (library, other health care providers, counselors).
  • Suggest the patient visit the patient decision aid library

SURE question: Are you clear about which benefits and risks matter most to you?

If the person answers 'no', then the healthcare professional can...

  • Suggest the patient find others who know what it is like to experience the benefits and harms
  • Suggest the patient talk to others who have made the decision
  • Suggest the patient look for some stories of what mattered most to others
  • Suggest the patient discuss with others about what matters most to them
  • Suggest the patient visit the patient decision aid library

SURE question: Do you have enough support and advice to make a choice?

If the person answers 'no', then the healthcare professional can...

  • Advise the patient to discuss his/her options with a trusted person (friend, partner, healthcare professional).
  • Discuss with the patient different ways he/she may be supported to make this choice (funds, transport, childcare).
  • Suggest he/she focuss on the opinions of others who matter most.
  • Suggest he/she complete the Ottawa Personal Decision Guide and share it with others.
  • Suggest the patient ask others involved to complete the guide.
  • Suggest the patient find a neutral person to help him/her.

SURE question: Do you feel SURE about the best choice for you?

If the person answers 'no', then the healthcare professional can...

  • Propose to the patient that they may make the decision at a later day
